About

Dr. Stephen Wheatcraft

Dr. Wheatcraft is an internationally recognized expert in the field of groundwater hydrology. He is  a Professor Emeritus at the University of Nevada, Reno and has done extensive research in hydrogeology, stochastic transport in heterogeneous porous media and hydrogeophysics. Dr. Wheatcraft has been doing expert witness consulting since 1988.

Research Funding

Dr. Wheatcraft has been awarded research grants totaling more than $30 million (adjusted to today's dollars). He has received research funding from the following agencies:

  • National Science Foundation
  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
  • Department of Energy
  • U.S. Office of Water Research and Technology
  • U.S. Geological Survey
  • National Institute of Global Environmental Change

Journals

Dr. Wheatcraft has over 50 papers published in peer-reviewed journals, including:

  • Water Resources Research
  • Ground Water
  • Advances in Water Resources
  • Vadose Zone Journal
  • Physica A, Statistical Mechanics and its Applications
  • Journal of Contaminant Hydrology
  • Transport in Porous Media
  • ASCE Journal of Hydrologic Engineering
  • Journal of Geophysical Research
  • Journal of the Soil Science Society of America
  • Reviews in Geophysics
  • Journal of Hydrology
  • Water Resources Bulletin

Awards and Recognition

Dr. Wheatcraft was selected to be the 1990-91 Henry Darcy Distinguished Lecturer, and award sponsored by the National Groundwater Association. One internationally recognized groundwater hydrologist is selected for this honor each year. He delivered his Darcy Lecture to nearly 30 universities and research institutions.

  • Elected as a Fellow, Geological Society of America
  • Elected Chairman of the Hydrogeology Division, Geological Society of America

Dr. Wheatcraft has served as Editor/Associate Editor for Water Resources Research and Groundwater, two of the most prestigious journals in the field of groundwater hydrology.

Dr. Wheatcraft was invited to serve as a panel member with many institutions:

  • National Academy of Sciences Panel: "Conceptual Models of Flow and Transport in the Fractured Vadose Zone".
  • National Science Foundation
  • Department of Energy Subsurface Science Program
  • Environmental Protection Agency Exploratory Research Program
  • Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada

Dr. Wheatcraft has over a dozen papers that have been cited more than 100 times each. One of his papers is named as one of the top 100 papers of all time in Water Resources Research and has over 1,200 citations. By way of comparison, the average paper in the field of groundwater hydrology is cited less than 10 times. A paper is considered "a benchmark paper" if it has more than 40 citations.
